Modular Zellige Poems

Zellige tiles are printed with poetry fragments corresponding with the names of the tiles. The tiles can be rearranged to fit together in different forms, creating a modular language. The tiles are placed face down on a piece of glass that hangs over a mirror. The participants physically fit together the various zellige tile pieces before looking down at the mirror to read the poems they are creating.

This mimics the Zellige assembly process wherein craftspersons, after meticulously chiselling each tile, assemble mosaics with the tiles face down, relying on the tiles to physically fit together perfectly to create kaleidoscopic patterns.

The tiles used in this piece were created at La Maison de l'Artisanat in Fez, Morocco.
